The Senior Citizens Assistance Program

This program provides assistance to senior citizens (people at least 65 years of age) who wish to remain in their own homes but who cannot afford to carry out necessary repairs. Funding is provided by the Province of Nova Scotia.

Eligible repairs must represent a threat to health or safety. Repairs to roofing, plumbing and heating are examples of work that is covered under the program. Repairs for cosmetic reasons (e.g. painting) are not permitted.

A grant to a maximum of $6,500 is available and does not have to be repaid.

Eligibility

  • The applicant or the applicant's spouse must be 65 years of age or older.
  • The applicant's household income must be below established ceilings, based on household size and area (Household Income Limits - HILS).
  • The applicant must own and occupy the home or have equivalent rights to ownership (life interest, etc.) and have done so for at least one year.
