Rent Supplement Program

This program is designed to assist low income families, seniors and individuals needing adequate, affordable rental housing. The rental units are located in both privately owned apartment buildings and co-operative/non-profit housing projects. The units are located throughout Nova Scotia.

Under the program a rental subsidy is paid to private landlords or cooperative/non-profit housing projects, allowing households to pay rent based upon income.

This program is managed by the Housing Authorities.

Eligibility

To qualify you must complete an application form and meet the criteria relating to income residency, and core need.

Applicants for rent supplement units are selected from public housing program wait lists.

Assistance Available

You pay rent based on your household income. The difference between what you pay, and the market rent, is paid to your landlord by the federal and provincial governments.

* Non-profit groups and ILM Co-ops select their own tenants - eligibility is verified by Housing Authorities who also calculate housing charge.
