New Rental Housing

This program is for developers who are interested in building new affordable rental units in areas where the population is growing or there is a shortage of housing. It provides up to $25,000 per unit in up-front capital funding and up to $25,000 per unit in rent supplement funding over 10 years.

Eligibility

Project developers must be from the non-profit or private sectors. Developers must submit project proposals in response to Requests for Proposals issued by the Department of Community Services. If a project proposal is approved, developers must sign an agreement with the Province stating that the housing will be offered to low-income households and remain affordable for at least 10 years.

Next steps

Requests for Proposals will be advertised through the Public Tenders Office and will provide the criteria for project proposals. Following the closing date for proposals, a committee made up of staff and housing partners will review and evaluate the proposals based on demonstrated need, financial viability, financial sustainability, project design, and appropriateness for the intended client and location. Department of Community Services staff will notify developers of approved project proposals.

To see if there are currently any Requests for Proposals under this program, you may visit the Public Tenders Office website. You may also make an inquiry to the Public Tenders Office by telephone at 902-424-3333 or in person at 6176 Young Street in Halifax.
