In 2006, the federal government set up provincial and territorial housing trust funds. Nova Scotia received $7.8 Million under the Off-Reserve Aboriginal Housing Trust. The purpose of this Trust is to increase investment in, and the availability of, adequate and affordable housing units and to assist in addressing short-term housing needs, specifically for Aboriginal households living off-reserve. Aboriginal organizations are the agents for delivering the programs. These funds are being delivered through various Aboriginal off-reserve groups.
