Fostering is not a business, so you won’t make any money.
Foster parents receive a monthly cheque to help cover the cost of the child’s food, clothing, and personal allowance. The first cheque will not come until a month or so after the child does, so foster parents need enough extra money in their budgets to support their own family and the new child or children until the reimbursement arrives.
People who receive Income Assistance or who are on small fixed income, generally find it difficult to foster. This is because our reimbursement system is “delayed”. This means that you receive the payments after you have spent the money. This could cause hardships for some families.
Other costs covered for the child when required are medical, recreation, child care and transportation.
