The federal and provincial governments both pay a benefit for children under the age of 18 to low-income families.
The benefit from the Federal government is called the Canada Child Tax Benefit. The provincial portion of this is called the Nova Scotia Child Benefit. You get the money from both benefits on the same cheque every month.
The Income Assistance program will assist you with the cost of school supplies for your children.
You do not need to apply for this benefit. In order to receive it, all you must do is file your taxes. Your cheque will automatically be sent to you if you are eligible.
