Focusing on safety potential

PhotoThe Priority Employer Program is about improving workplace safety and getting people back to work, which can ultimately save money for employers on their premiums to the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB).

The Program is focused on businesses with the most potential to improve safety, based on the number of claims per year, and provides them with extra support. WCB staff work onsite with employers to:

  • Help them analyze where and how accidents occur
  • Offer a survey tool for employees to help develop an action plan for improvements

Depending on various factors, the time onsite could be up to one day per week for a year and could encompass anything from providing information to hands-on coaching.

In 2006, 126 employers were involved in the program, and they’ve seen results. Compared to the results of all firms insured by the WCB, those who received a year of support had:

  • 8% fewer time loss injuries (or “less frequent time loss injuries” - original: reduction in time loss injury frequency)
  • 10% lower costs per claim
  • 15% shorter claims

For employees, that means fewer injuries and a more safe and timely return to work for those who are injured.
