Protecting the environment,
not the paperwork

PhotoChanges to the application and approval processes for on-site septic systems are saving Nova Scotia home builders time and money, while ensuring a clean and sustainable environment. A pilot project in Bedford and Bridgewater to test the regulatory changes resulted in approval wait times being reduced from three weeks to one.

The application form was reduced from eight pages to two, making it easier for the builders and the inspectors. To further speed the process, qualified people can submit documents to confirm regulations and technical guidelines are being followed. Then an inspector reviews the installation.

The regulations were developed after public consultation that included 75 comments from industry, community organizations, governments, consultants and citizens. Waste Water Nova Scotia’s contribution helped ensure the changes were effective. Now, building in areas where municipal sewer and water aren’t available can begin sooner. And inspectors spend less time on the paperwork and more time inspecting systems and environmental threats.
