Inspectors are the frontline employees who enforce regulations. Through the Competitiveness and Compliance Initiative, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour worked with the Nova Scotia Community College to develop a common training program for its inspectors. The program ensures all inspectors receive consistent training on inspection, investigation and prosecution that will complement their program-specific training. It also encourages employees from the different program areas to share their experiences and inspection issues so they can learn from one another.
The outcome will be better-equipped inspectors and more consistent enforcement. The first group completed the training in June 2006. Over the next few years, the training will be delivered to all inspectors in Occupational Health and Safety, Public Safety, Environmental Monitoring and Compliance, and Alcohol and Gaming.
