In November 2005, the Nova Scotia Food Safety regulation replaced 75 sets of municipal and provincial regulations with one consistent regulation for the entire province. The result is more practical, consistent regulation that creates a level playing field, regardless of location.
This legislation is based on the work of the Canadian Food Inspection System Implementation Group, a federal-provincial-territorial government committee. Extensive consultation and input by various industry associations provided valuable information and will help with implementation.
The new regulation protects the food supply based on science, risk analysis and standards recognized by government, the food industry and consumers. To complement the new regulation, a more comprehensive Nova Scotia Food Retail and Food Services Code (Oct 2005, 1.5MB PDF) was developed based on the National Food Code. It clearly explains the harmonized food safety standards and operational guidelines using practical examples.
