The Better Regulation Index is a tool to better understand the combined impact on business of regulatory paperwork from all provincial departments. While we know that it is one of several indicators of the regulatory burden felt by business, we also recognize no one measure is perfect.
In addition to the Index, we track a variety of service and business generated surveys that add more detail to the picture of the impact of regulation.
Taking it a step further, Novas Scotia partnered with Industry Canada to have Statistics Canada carry out the Survey of Regulatory Compliance Costs. The results tell us even more about the cumulative impact of regulation, especially as municipal, provincial and federal requirements were captured. The survey will be repeated every three years.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB)’s report, Prosperity Restricted by Red Tape, provides valuable insight into the full cost estimated by business of compliance with regulation overall.
