Measuring Progress

PhotoThe paperwork burden was the first target set for the Better Regulation Initiative for a number of reasons:

  • Paperwork can be a significant amount of work for business, and it's proportionately larger for small business
  • Changes to paperwork can make it easier for business without negatively affecting the protection element
  • Initial work on improving regulation made it clear the paperwork burden was a good indicator of the overall regulatory burden
  • Addressing paperwork targets the cumulative impact of regulation from all departments on business
  • Impact on client satisfaction and frustration levels

In Nova Scotia, we use the Better Regulation Index as an indicator of paperwork burden and to measure our progress.
