Better Regulation Index

The Better Regulation Index is Nova Scotia's first inventory of regulatory paperwork impact from all provincial departments.

The index found that Nova Scotia businesses spent an estimated 615,000 hours on regulatory paper work required by the province from April 2005 to March 2006.

Results in year two show, for the first time in a generation, a downward trend in the paper work burden, and an initial reduction of about 2.5 percent to just under 600,000 hours.

Year four showed increased momentum with a reduction of 6.5% for a total of 14.8% annually, equivalent to more than 91,000 hours annually valued at almost $2 million in savings. There is still more work to be done, but increasing momentum shows we will meet our target.

"Wrestling the red tape beast is no easy feat. But, the government of Nova Scotia has shown a real commitment to do just that through ongoing measurement and accountability."

- Leanne Hachey, vice-president, Atlantic, CFIB
