History

pictureLike governments across Canada, and indeed around the world, Nova Scotia has been looking for ways to streamline paperwork for business and improve regulation without compromising protection for the public and the environment.

The Better Regulation Initiative was launched in the spring of 2005, following the final report of the Red Tape Reduction Task Force (Sep 2004, 0.3MB PDF).

The report featured progress from 2000 to 2004, but also emphasized the need for continuous improvement and a new approach to regulation.  The Task Force recommended:

“Red tape reduction must be an integral part of government’s corporate culture.”

Better Regulation is changing the government’s approach to regulation and involving employees across all departments to ensure the improvements are pervasive and lasting.  That effort is led by Treasury and Policy Board and senior managers from across government.  They have been considering input from the Nova Scotia business community and interest groups, and developing and implementing plans and processes to reduce unnecessary, uncoordinated and duplicate regulatory requirements.
