Staff from regulatory departments, together with federal counterparts and business partners came together on June 6th to share the progress of the Better Regulation Initiative and to take a look at regulation through a business lens.
The first Better Regulation Initiative Staff Update, a half day conference, attracted 85 representatives and a diverse offering of guest speakers.
A business panel with Leanne Hachey, Vice-President Atlantic, Canadian Federation of Independent Business; Brad Smith, Vice-President Greater Halifax Partnership; and Holly Boston, Executive Director, Nova Scotia Association of Regional Development Authorities engaged the audience in a discussion on the link between competitiveness and excessive regulation. Each described the regulatory impacts felt by small and medium size business, and focused on the areas most relevant to their members.
Federal representatives Randa Saryeddine of Industry Canada, and Edie Pastuch of the Canada Revenue Agency were also on hand to discuss the federal government's approach to regulatory reform and reducing the regulatory burden for small business.
The audience also had the opportunity to learn more about the strategic directions of the Better Regulation Initiative, and the new BizPal initiative that will make it much easier for business to interact with government, and ultimately contribute towards the Better Regulation’s 20 percent paperwork reduction goal.
Deputy Minister Bob Fowler closed the session reminding participants that the Better Regulation Initiative is ‘mission critical’ for the province, and encouraged support throughout all departments for the on-going success of the initiative.
