Collection Procedure

1. Preferably, fecal samples should be collected from the rectum. If material is collected from the ground, it should be from the top of a freshly passed deposit.
    
   Care must be taken with samples collected from the ground in pet animals to avoid doing fecal exams on neighbourhood stray animals. It is advisable to collect conly those samples which can be positively identified as relevant to the animal in question.


2. An appropriate sample size is 5 g. Preferably submit a "golf ball" size sample in a zip-lock-type plastic bag or container that is air tight, water-tight, and suitably robust.


3. All containers must be clearly and completely labeled with:
   - owner's name
   - animal identification
   - species
   - animal age
   - date of collection

 

4. Samples should be submitted to the lab within 24 hours if possible. Store the specimens in a refrigerator until shipping and send with ice packs.

HERD SAMPLES

Ideally, every animal in the herd/flock should be sampled. However, for a reliable evaluation of a herd, sample 10-12% of individual animals. When samples of individuals cannot be identified, ie, in feed lots, take random samples and clearly label them as such.
