Caribbean Shipping and Distribution Study

Background and Executive Summary

One of the goals of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing is for Nova Scotia agri-food producers to have cost effective shipping to markets in:

  • Bermuda, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic in the north Caribbean regions
  • Barbados, Trinidad, Dominica, St. Lucia, Guyana, and St. Vincent in the south
It is also the desire to examine the possibiltiy of establishing warehousing and distribution facilities in Nova Scotia or on one or more of the Caribbean islands, where different shipments could be consolidated. The Department also wishes to examine potential for developing new shipping routes, and to look specifically at the Cuban connection. The objectives of the study are to:
  • profile the shipping and distribution situation in the Caribbean, for air and sea, with primary focus on those markets listed above:
  • analyse the following options for improving the access for the Nova Scotia agri-food industry in the Caribbean market:
    • the establishement of a Nova Scotia consolidation point or Caribbean warehousing/distribution facility
    • the development of new shipping routes
    • the potential enhancement of the Cuban connection
  • recommend ways for the Nova Scotia agri-food industry to better supply key markets in the Caribbean
