Executive Summary
This report has examined the market potential of Nova
Scotia-produced greenhouse, coloured peppers. Areas
investigated include imports, production, exports,
consumption trends and opinions of wholesalers, specialists
and greenhouse operators.
Imports of coloured peppers into Canada far exceed
production. Per capita consumption has also increased
dramatically over the last two decades.
Wholesalers stated that demand was high for coloured
peppers, and consumers are somewhat price insensitive
when purchasing the peppers when high quality standards
were maintained.
Opinions among specialists and greenhouse operators
were divided when considering Nova Scotia production.
Several specialists believe we have the technical
ability to grow the peppers, but financial returns
would not be adequate. Other specialists and growers
are sceptical that we can grow a product of sufficient
quality, even if returns were adequate.
This paper concludes that there is definite market
potential for the production of greenhouse coloured
peppers, although production on an economically viable
basis is questionable.
