Agency, Board or Commission Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association Council
1 Statute Veterinary Medical Act
2 Purpose To regulate the practice of veterinary medicine and to govern its members in accordance with the Act, regulations and by laws in order that public interest may be served and protected. The Council is the governing body to carry out the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association (NSVMA) purposes.
3 Functions Council is the governing body to oversee the:
  1. Regulation of the practice of veterinary medicine through the establishment of registration, professional conduct and facility inspection processes as set out in the Act, regulations and by laws.
  2. Establishment and promotion of standards of professional practice and Code of Ethics.
  3. Advancement and promotion of the practice of veterinary medicine.
4 Composition President, Past President, Vice President, Treasurer, three members at large who are elected. One person from the general public, who is a non veterinarian appointed by Governor in Council (GIC), one NSVMA member to serve as Canadian Veterinary Medical Association representative, who shall be an ex officio and non voting member, and the Registrar who shall be an ex officio and non voting member of Council.
5 Formal Qualifications No formal qualifications required for the person from the general public who is appointed by GIC.
6 Work & Experience Requirements Preference to be given to applicants with previous involvement/experience in matters related to the board's function. Experience with boards, commissions or agencies will be considered an asset.
7 Skills Required Demonstrated ability to: apply a broad perspective on issues; work with Council members; communicate effectively; judge fairly; make decisions; high degree of integrity and handle confidential information.
8 Statutory Nomination Requirements None
9 Traditional Nomination Requirements New position to be effective when the Veterinary Medical Act is proclaimed
10 Remuneration Expenses
11 Anticipated Time Commitments Approximately 8 meetings per year
12 Other Notes When the term of the GIC appointment expires, this person will hold office until his/her successor is appointed or until he/she is reappointed.
