Agency, Board or Commission Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission
1Statute Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission Act
2 Purpose Govern, control and regulate harness racing in the Maritimes.
3 Functions Regulates the harness racing industry and establishes uniform rules for the industry in the Maritimes.
4 Composition Consists of 6 members, 2 are nominated by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister. The actual appointment is by the Council of Atlantic Premiers.
5 Formal Qualifications None
6 Work & Experience Requirements Should have: knowledge of the industry; awareness of current issues in industry; ability to understand regulations and regulatory procedures. Should not have direct involvement in the industry.
7 Skills Required Should have: knowledge of the industry; ability to judge fairly; proven ability to make decisions; high degree of integrity; and ability to handle confidential information.

Chair position requires: proven leadership abilities; proven experience in chairing organizations; good communication skills.

Statutory Nomination Requirements 2 members are nominated by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister. The actual appointment is by the Council of Maritime Premiers.
9 Traditional Nomination Requirements Historically, 1 member represents mainland Nova Scotia and 1 member represents Cape Breton.
10 Remuneration Chair: $200/meeting + expenses
Member: $150/meeting + expenses
11 Anticipated Time Commitments 8-10 meetings per year
