Purpose |
Responsible for determining whether an organization
meets the criteria for a general farm organization and
designates any organization meeting that criteria as a
general farm organization for the purposes of the Act.
Registration facilitates access to government programs
and assistance as well as creating a stable funding base
for general farm organizations in the province. The Nova
Scotia Federation of Agriculture is the only designated
general farm organization at this time. |

Functions |
Determines whether an organization meets the legislative
criteria for a general farm organization. If the organization
meets the criteria, the Committee will designate, by order,
that organization. The Committee also hears appeals of
decisions made under the Act. |

Composition |
The Committee is composed of an employee of the
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, appointed by the
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, who acts as Chair, a
registered farm business operator appointed by each
general farm organization and, at the discretion of the
Minister, another person appointed by the Minister. |

Work & Experience Requirements |
Members should have experience in community or industry
related activities, ie. service on boards or involvement in
industry organizations or businesses.

Skills Required |
Members must have: broad understanding of the primary
agriculture industry; understanding of the roles and
functions of the farm registration system; good decision
making and problem-solving abilities; ability to think
objectively and impartially; ability to deal professionally with
confidential/sensitive information; possess a high degree of
integrity; a favourable reputation among their peers. |

Statutory Nomination Requirements |
Any general farm organization appointment must be a farm
business operator and must be appointed by the general
farm organization. |

Remuneration |
Reasonable/necessary expenses for non public service members. |

Anticipated Time Commitments |
Meetings are infrequent and time commitment is minimal. |
