Food Hygiene (Handling) Courses

Who should take a food safety course?

The short answer to this question is everybody! There are many food safety courses on the market today, some are recognized by this department and some are not.

The course presented by the Department's staff is based on a course developed in British Columbia in association with industry and governments. The course has been retrofitted to meet Nova Scotia's needs. The instructors are all Food Safety Specialists employed by the NS Department of Agriculture and are all Public Health Inspectors certified by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. They are also certified as Food Safety Professionals by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) (USA).

The primary targets of the course are people working in the food service industry. It is required in our legislation that at least one person per shift must have this, or similarly recognized, course.

The certificate must be renewed every five years. We strongly recommend that all people working in the food service industry have this training.

Lately many other organizations have required this course in order to complete their own training. The Continuing Care Assistant program as well as Hospitality courses and Cooking courses at the Nova Scotia Community Colleges will not graduate students until they have successfully completed this course. The VON and other home care professionals require all their employees to have the course and we are finding that many employment groups are sending their students as well. Many high school students take this course in preparation for their resumes and work placements. Similarly many franchises in the food service industry, as well, as institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools require that all of their employees to have this training.

There are many volunteer groups who attend these seminars to ensure food safety at functions such as church dinners, county exhibitions and fairs, pot lucks and many other types of events. A special three hour version of the course is available to volunteer groups exceeding 25 people at no charge. Contact your local field office for scheduling.
