They develop and implement policies and standards for these facilities, they approve new education programs and set standards for staff's training levels.

The Department of Community Services relies on the Food Safety Specialist from the Department of Agriculture for guidance in regards to food safety and infection control as well as physical hazards. The Food Safety Specialist inspects all child care centres in the province and makes recommendations to the operator and the Department of Community Services. Education sessions are also held with the operators with focus on food safety, sanitation, personal hygiene and infection control.
