Growing Opportunities: Realizing
the benefits from the Local food economy was a business
development conference on March 25-26, 2008 at the Holiday
Inn Harbourview in Dartmouth. The conference was hosted
by the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and assembled
a group of international and local speakers, whose work
and ideas have helped develop and promote the local food
economy. The purpose of the conference was to address
the supply side of the local food initiative and raise
awareness of the standards and conditions that must be
met to operate within the various channels of the agri-food
industry. Represented among these channels were individuals
from retail, direct marketing, institutional purchasing
and the restaurant sector.
