Public Input into the Development of Animal Protection Act Regulations

Amendments to the Animal Protection Act, included in a Bill entitled the Protection of Animal Welfare and Security Act or PAWS, were passed in the Spring 2013 sitting of the Nova Scotia Legislature.

Among the changes to the Act, PAWS enables the Minister of Agriculture to create regulations related to:

  • Standards of design, construction and maintenance of shelters, facilities, restraints and tethers,
  • Standards of care with which dogs are to be maintained,
  • Standards with respect to the sale of dogs
  • Transportation of dogs

The Department is working with organizations such as the SPCA, People for Dogs, the NS Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to develop these draft regulations.
