Treaty Day

In 1985, the Supreme Court of Canada affirmed the Treaty of 1752 was still strong and called upon Her Majesty to honour the Treaty and others made with the Mi’kmaw Nation. 

In 1986, the then Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr. proclaimed every October 1st as Treaty Day.		   
It commemorates the key role of treaties in the relationship between the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq and the Crown. The annual ceremony reaffirms the historic presence of the Mi’kmaq who have occupied the land for thousands of years. The Mi’kmaq Nation and the Crown also exchange gifts to mark each October 1st.

Award Recipient Chronology

In 1993 the Grand Chief Donald Marshall Senior Memorial Elder Award was introduced by Premier John Savage. The recipient(s) of this award are nominated by members of the Aboriginal community and honors them for their contributions to their community(ies) over their lifetime. Successful candidates are chosen by the Treaty Day Committee.

In 1997 the Chief Noel Doucette Memorial Youth Education (Achievement) Award was introduced by Premier John Savage. The recipient(s) of this award are nominated by members of the Aboriginal community and honors them for their educational achievements as well as their contributions to their community(ies). Successful candidates are chosen by the Treaty Day Committee.

In 1998 the Provincial celebrations included an award presentation made by the Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK) - the Donald Marshall Senior Memorial Scholarship Fund Award which is presented to Aboriginal youths who excel in academics and contribute to their community(ies). Successful candidates are chosen by the MK Board.
