Natural Resources Education Centre

Our outdoor programs foster a sense of stewardship and sustainable development of our natural resources.

We offer twenty-nine curriculum-based programs for school and community groups. As well, a number of special events are held throughout the year.

Less then an hour's drive from metro, the Natural Resources Education Center is nestled in the beautiful Musquodoboit Valley. The 80 hectare woodland provides opportunities for field tours, exhibits and demonstrations. Self-guided interpretive trails can be used for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or nature hikes. Many of the trails are wheelchair accessible, featured in “Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia”.

Wilderness Adventure Day Camps 2008!
The Natural Resources Education Centre (NREC) is committed to natural resource education. NREC’s annual Wilderness Adventure Day Camps will challenge and excite young explorers who are looking for real adventure involving outdoor skills and hands-on experiences. The NREC is located in Middle Musquodoboit, and is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.

New Programs!
We have created a new orienteering program called "GPS Use and Application", appropriate for grades 7 to 12. We have also updated and revised our "Pond Life" program, and re-named it "Wetland Wonders". It is appropriate for grades 4 to 12 (with obvious differences in content and language of the program according to grade level). Please see the Teacher's Guide and Description for both programs under "List of Education Programs".

Summer/March Break Camp
Would you like to learn more about forestry and the environment? Make sure you check the NREC News for updates on our day camps during March Break and the summer months!

Outreach Programs
We can provide the classroom portion of the listed programs at any school within a 1 hour drive of NREC. Outdoor sessions may be provided if suitable forest is located nearby. This may require an additional visit. Fees are $100 for a class up to 1 hr, $150 for a morning, and $200 for a full day.

Spring Festival
Focusing on the Maple Sugar industry, this week-long event welcomes participation from schools and the community to visit a sugarbush and develop a better understanding of the science and mechanics of this unique process.

Christmas Festival of Trees and Crafts
The Natural Resources Education Center is pleased to announce the 18th annual Christmas Festival of Trees and Crafts. This year’s festival is taking place on November 30th, December 1st and 2nd in Middle Musquodoboit and will showcase over 30 theme decorated balsam fir Christmas trees and a craft show with over 60 quality crafters.
