WHAT IS IT?
The Environmental Technology Program (ETP) will support the development, demonstration, adoption and commercialization of innovative environmental technologies that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant emissions while advancing sustainable prosperity in Nova Scotia. It will directly invest $9.5 million into projects initiated by Nova Scotian businesses, institutions and organizations, and will leverage millions more . This funding was provided by the Government of Canada in 2007.

The objective:
The objectives of the ETP relate directly to the goals established in the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act passed in the spring of 2007 by the Province of Nova Scotia. The Act commits to improving the environment and economy of the province by:
- Reducing its greenhouse gases to 10% below 1990 levels by 2020
- Reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by 20% (from 2000 levels) by 2009
- Reducing sulphur dioxide emissions by 50% (from sources existing in 2001) by 2010
- Reducing mercury emissions by 70% (from 2001 levels) by 2010
- Meeting the Canada-wide standard for airborne particulate matter by 2010
- Meeting the Canada-wide standard for ground-level ozone (which contributes to smog) by 2010
These goals will be achieved by facilitating the growth of a sustainable economy in Nova Scotia- one that promotes a culture of conservation and efficiency, utilizes local resources for the production of energy, and supports responsible development.
Within this framework, the objectives of the Environmental Technology Program (ETP) are to:
- Assist Nova Scotia organizations in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions through the support of the development, demonstration, adoption and commercialization of environmental technologies and innovations, and
- Build capacity within the province to initiate further emission reductions.
