Project LEAD

What is Project LEAD?
Project LEAD is a law-related education program for youth.
LEAD stands for Legal Enrichment and Decision Making. The program teaches youth about the consequences of poor choices and encourages them to strive for excellence. It was designed by the Office of the District Attorney of Los Angeles County in 1993 and has since been adapted by many other jurisdictions.
Our version of Project LEAD sets the program in an Afrocentric context. Youth who take part will not only be learning about the law, but also about African culture and heritage in Nova Scotia.
This program will work on improving the lives of African Nova Scotian youth from across the province.

Who can Participate?
The progam is open to African Nova Scotian youth in Grades 5-8 living in the areas of New Glasgow, Sydney/Whitney Pier, Glace Bay, and Digby.
Youth who participate in Project LEAD gain the skills and necessary know-how to make positive healthy life choices and pursue their goals.

How does Project LEAD work?
The program lasts 25 weeks.
Participants engage in role-playing activities based on real-life scenarios and challenges, such as making new friends, handling peer pressure, and being tempted to skip class.
They participate in workshops, such as
• African Nova Scotians and the Law – Legal History
• The System and You: Youth and the Law
They meet law makers in their community and experience the justice system through field trips and mock trials –some may even be inspired to head to law school or police academy.
All the program’s activities are designed to help reinforce the importance of respecting family, authority figures, and the community.

Where is Project LEAD being held?
At Community Centres in four communities:
• Ward One Social and Recreation Centre, New Glasgow
• Digby Regional High School, Digby
• Glace Bay UNIA Hall, Glace Bay
• Whitney Pier Youth Club, Whitney Pier
