A Path to 2020

Safer, Healthy Communities

We want people to feel safe and be safe in their communities. While our crime rate has generally declined over the past 15 years, it remains above the national average. We're committed to changing that statistic.

Nova Scotians want tough laws, and they want those laws to be strictly enforced – including swift and serious consequences for those who break the law. That's a critical part of our new crime prevention strategy, and the purpose of our campaign to support the federal government's efforts to toughen its Youth Criminal Justice Act. And that's why we're putting 250 more police officers on our streets and in our communities.

We are also committed to preventing crime - by getting at the root causes. That means tackling tough issues like poverty, and working hard to support healthy families and communities.

Healthy families need access to medication. Our new pharmacare program means that up to 180,000 people now without private prescription coverage will soon have that access.
