A Path to 2020

Better Roads, Infrastructure

In order to compete in the global economy...

In order to better connect Nova Scotians to each other...

In order to provide the services that a modern economy and all Nova Scotians demand...

... our province requires better roads, libraries, courthouses, schools, hospitals and Internet connections. Yet, we have a multi-billion dollar infrastructure deficit standing in the way.

We are making progress. We are more than halfway toward our four-year goal of paving 2000 kilometres of roads. We are making high-speed Internet accessible to all Nova Scotians by the end of 2009. (No other province can claim to be as far along as we are in bringing high-speed Internet access to every home!) And we are established as Canada's Atlantic Gateway for international shipping, with tremendous potential for the Port of Halifax, as well as ports in the Strait of Canso, Sydney, and Yarmouth.

We have plans to do more. In November 2007, we signed a $634 million agreement with the federal government that will help the province make infrastructure improvements, including roads, green energy, public transit, and water and wastewater systems. We have also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Partnerships British Columbia to determine how we may be able to use Strategic Infrastructure Partnerships (SIPs) to build roads, health facilities and other infrastructure more quickly, and within budget. We also have a program to twin and modernize highways from Yarmouth and Sydney by 2020.
