A Path to 2020

Protecting Our Environment

We live in a beautiful province, and we want it to stay that way. To do that, we need to tackle climate change and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We need to become more energy efficient and increase the amount of renewable energy we use.

We have set aggressive goals for the protection of our environment. These goals are contained in provincial legislation, the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act. We are also developing a new strategy to protect and develop our natural resources: our forests, minerals, parks and biodiversity.

It will cost money to reach these goals and reduce our carbon footprint. Government is making funds available so Nova Scotians can reach these goals. Money is available for homeowners and individuals through Conserve Nova Scotia and for businesses and municipalities through the Nova Scotia EcoTrust for Clean Air and Climate Change program.

Energy efficiency will play an important role in the protection of our environment. Simple changes can have dramatic results. By making our homes more energy efficient, for instance, we can reduce our greenhouse gases by 4.6 tonnes per year per home. If you are interested in reducing your energy consumption or making your home more energy efficient, Conserve Nova Scotia offers a variety of financial incentives and rebates.

We are also becoming leaders in renewable energy. Over the next five years, more than $1 billion is expected to be invested in Nova Scotia in renewable energy. The number of wind turbines is expected to grow from 40 to 250. We are also considering the development of tidal energy. In Nova Scotia, we have some of the best conditions for wind power generation and some of the highest tides in the world.

Water Resources Management Strategy
Nova Scotia's water resources are natural benefits to the province. That's why the Province is taking the lead in developing a water resources management strategy. What are the best ways to protect and use our water? Your input is welcome. Public consultation workshops are underway now. When completed in 2010, the water strategy will help benefit: the environment, industry, tourism, and communities. Check online for the water strategy discussion paper, a feedback form, and the schedule of public workshop locations. May 31st is the deadline for comment.

Ship Harbour Long Lake Candidate Wilderness Area
Nova Scotians have an opportunity to help develop a new protected wilderness area on the province's eastern shore. Public consultations are underway. They are the first step in a process to determine the final boundaries of the new 14,000-hectare wilderness area. Comment may be provided in writing or by attending public information forums.
